Meeting statistics

Abstract submission ended on 28 February. We received 1023 submissions for posters and abstracts. There will be 337 slots for talks (including 8 plenaries and 66 invited speakers). About 500 submissions will be presented as a "regular" poster. The remaining 200 contributions will show up in the "essence poster" category (summary mini-posters). The refereeing process starts mid-March.

We received submissions from 40 countries across the globe. Here’s the top 10 of contributing nations:

  • Germany 165
  • United Kingdom 121
  • Switzerland 102
  • USA 100
  • France 73
  • Finland 62
  • Sweden 65
  • Canada 38
  • Netherlands 30
  • Australia 27

The distribution of submissions to the 29 regular symposia shows a strong bias towards these topics:

  1. Symposium 21: Evolutionary ecological genomics
  2. Symposium 23: Climate change and evolution
  3. Symposium 01: Experimental evolution across the microbe/macrobe divide

The new category of "general" symposia (for submissions outside the regular specialist symposia) received one quarter of all submissions (264). We are looking forward to seeing a very diverse collection of topics here.
All symposia will obtain a number of time slots that is correlated with the proportion of submissions they received, so acceptance rates for submitted talks will be more or less similar - roughly 20-30% - independent of the subject.

ESEB 2011 in Tuebingen, Germany

The historic university town of Tuebingen is a perfect venue to catch up with your international colleagues. Embedded in the beautiful landscape of central Baden-Wuerttemberg (SW Germany), this small but cosmopolitan town hosts 20,000 students. With one of the oldest universities in Europe (founded 1477), Tuebingen offers cultural highlights from the Middle Ages to the present. You can also look forward to enjoying warm summer evenings over a glass of local wine or beer in one of many open-air bars and beer gardens in the traffic-free centre or along the river Neckar.
The Tuebinger meeting has implemented a few changes in the long-standing tradition of ESEB congresses. Here are some of them:

  1. Four, not five, full meeting days (excluding arrival and departure days). Pre-booked sightseeing tours will take place before or after the meeting. During the conference, we offer brief guided tours in the evenings.
  2. The “classic” Specialist symposia run in 9 parallel sessions.
  3. Each day starts with two plenary talks followed by six “general” parallel sessions for submitted talks outside the scope of the specialist symposia.
  4. Three poster sessions and extra incentives (with financial support from the Volkswagen Foundation) to present and view posters will boost poster visibility and impact.
  5. In-conference communication will be maximized by making optimal use of electronic communication. We shall also implement new ways to encourage communication and facilitate meeting people you find interesting (with financial support from the Volkswagen Foundation).
  6. A public transportation ticket is included, allowing you to move in and around Tuebingen for free. It also allows free access to local sightseeing highlights.

A big farewell event in the historic monastery Bebenhausen closes the meeting.
